SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team made it two in a row Saturday, edging Lipscomb 4-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference play at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (7-11, 2-4 A-Sun) opened the day, sweeping the Bisons (7-10, 3-4 A-Sun) in doubles play. This marked the third time this season Upstate has swept doubles action and twice in two days.
At No. 1 doubles, Matthias Kidler and Ramon Simonetti slipped past LU's Stuart Tierney and Miguel Cortez 9-8, while the No. 2 pair of Yvon Haessig and Gonzalo Blanco edged Oliver Strecker and David Salazar 8-7. Darling and Viktor Selander completed the Spartans' sweep in doubles, beating Colby Shaw and John Tougher 9-7 at the No. 3 spot.
Upstate jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Kidler made quick work of Stercker at No.1 singles, sailing to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. At the No. 3 slot, Haessig gave the Spartans a 3-0 advantage, claiming a 6-1, 7-6 win over Daniel Hernandez. Selander clinched the match for Upstate at No. 5 singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Cortez.
The Bisons managed to take the final three matches, picking wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Simonetti dropped a 7-5, 7-5 decision to Salazar, while Blanco fell 7-6, 7-6 to Tierney and Yates lost 6-3, 1-6, 10-4 to Shaw.
