Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis suffered a 4-3 setback to Troy Friday afternoon in the season opener from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Spartans jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point following victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Spartan seniors Taylor Cohen and Talia Rojas defeated Anja Cosovic and Trang Huynh 6-4 from the No. 1 position before Ana Baran and Isabel von Stryk clinched the point by turning in a 6-2 victory over Margot De Haan and Monica Gonzalez.
De Haan tied the score 1-1 when she defeated Baran 6-0, 6-0 from the No. 5 singles position. Cohen put the Spartans back on top 2-1 following her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Lyubov Dorofeeva at No. 2.
Victories by Troy at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions put the Trojans ahead 3-2, but freshman Anna Zoske tied the score 3-3 when she earned a point for the Spartans by besting Gonzalez 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 position.
Brooke Durden sealed the match for Troy after she defeated Lindsey Buenger 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6.
Upstate returns to action Jan. 24 when the Spartans head west to take on Pac-12 foe Oregon at 7 p.m. from the Student Tennis Center.
