Atlanta, Ga. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team opened the 2014 spring season with a 5-2 setback Monday afternoon at No. 62 Georgia State from the Sharon Lester Tennis Center.
Georgia State grabbed an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point after claiming victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 position.
The Panthers went on to win the first three singles matches to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the match with a victory at the No. 3 position by Jannis Koeke. Upstate, however, was victorious in two singles matches, as both Gonzalo Blanco and Jamie Yates posted victories from their respective positions.
Blanco turned in a 6-5 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 victory over Felipe Jaworski at the No. 2 position, while Yates bested Eric Baum 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.
Upstate returns to action Jan. 31 when the Spartans travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
