Eugene, Ore. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Portland and 5-2 to Eastern Washington Saturday to complete weekend competition from the Student Tennis Center on the University of Oregon campus.
The Spartans opened the day by taking on Portland and won the first doubles match when Anna Zoske and Sarah Vande Berg bested Saroop Dhatt and Gabrielle Gorence 6-3 from the No. 3 position. Portland, however, answered by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to claim the point and take a 1-0 lead.
Sophie Van Den Aarssen put the Pilots ahead 2-0 following her 6-0, 6-2 victory over Zoske from the No. 3 singles position. Portland went ahead 3-0 when Jelena Lazarevic defeated Isabel von Stryk 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2. Maja Miladenovic clinched the match for Portland with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Taylor Cohen from the No. 1 position.
Despite the loss, Vande Berg turned in her second win of the match when she posted a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Gorence at the No. 6 position.
Later in the afternoon against Eastern Washington, the Eagles captured the doubles point to go ahead 1-0 following wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Von Stryk and Ana Baran earned a 7-5 win over Erin Blessing and Dani Young from No. 2.
Von Stryk tied the score 1-1 following her 6-0, 6-3 singles win over Blessing at No. 2. Alexis Filliol put Eastern Washington ahead 2-1 when she defeated Baran 6-0, 6-1 from the No. 5 position. Zoske pulled Upstate back even at 2-2 after downing Katrina Domingo 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3.
Moira Hedberg needed a super tiebreaker to defeat Taylor Cohen 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) from the No. 1 position and put the Eagles ahead 3-2. A second super tiebreaker was needed to determine the winner between Brittany Ellingsen and Vande Berg from No. 6. Vande Berg won the first set 6-4, but Ellingsen responded by taking the next two sets 6-2, 1-0 (10-8) to clinch the match for Eastern Washington.
Upstate returns to the court Friday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans travel across town to take on Wofford.
