Spartan Men's Tennis Defeat Gardner-Webb 5-2

Boiling Springs, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team secured its first win of the season when it defeated Gardner-Webb 5-2 Friday afternoon from the Webb Tennis Complex.

Upstate grabbed a 1-0 lead early on after taking the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Matthias Kidler and Ramon Simonetti bested Jonathan Walker and Brendan Dempsey 6-1 at No. 2, while Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni turned in a 6-4 victory at No. 3 over Pepe Batalla and Ernest Alberch.

Yates put Upstate ahead 2-0 with his 6-4, 6-0 singles win over Walker at the No. 5 position. Kidler stretched the lead to 3-0 following a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Benjamin Kaszas at No. 1.

Following a victory by Gardner-Webb at No. 2, Dharni sealed the win for Upstate by downing Batalla 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6. Simonetti also earned a singles win playing in the No. 3 position, downing Alberch 6-5 (7-5), 6-3.

Upstate returns to the court Wednesday at 3 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Clinton, S.C., to battle Presbyterian.
