Boiling Springs, N.C. – In a match that came down to the final set, the USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss at Gardner-Webb Tuesday afternoon from the Webb Tennis Complex.
USC Upstate took control early on and jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point by claiming the final two of three matches. After Gardner-Webb captured the first match from the No. 2 position, the Spartan duo of Taylor Cohen and Sarah Vande Berg defeated Mary Walker Mixon and Teodora Stanciu 8-0 at No. 3 to keep Upstate in play for the point. Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas completed the comeback with an 8-7 win over Yasmin Doost and Ronia Hutterli at No. 1.
Rokia Sacko put Gardner-Webb on the board when she posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Vande Berg at No. 5 singles. Hutterli put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 following her 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rojas at the No. 3 position.
Anna Zoske knotted the score at 2-2 when she bested Jenny Lunde 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 position before Catherine White regained the lead for Gardner-Webb following her 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Ana Baran. Von Stryk kept the Spartans alive at No. 1 after turning in a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Doost. In the deciding match, Cohen took the first set over Valeriia Popko 6-3, but Popko responded by winning the second set 6-4 and the third set 7-5 to clinch the win for Gardner-Webb.
Upstate returns to the court Friday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans play at Charlotte.
