Greensboro, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss at UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon from the UNCG Tennis Courts.
UNCG took an early 1-0 lead in the match when the Spartans claimed the doubles point by winning the first two matches. Yasmin Franco and Jamie Grinberg defeated Sarah Vande Berg and Anna Zoske 6-2 at the No. 2 position before Kayla Gammie and Devon Sutherland posted a 6-3 victory over Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas at No. 1.
UNCG quickly went up 2-0 after earning another point due to a forfeit victory from the No. 6 singles position. Gammie put UNCG up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Zoske at No. 2, but Upstate responded by winning a point at the No. 1 position following a win from von Stryk in a three set thriller. UNCG's Stephanie Falcon won the first set 6-4, but von Stryk answered with a 6-1 win in the second set before taking the super tiebreaker 10-4 in the third set to take the point.
Franco clinched the match for UNCG thereafter when she defeated Rojas 6-3, 6-1 from the No. 3 position.
Upstate returns to the court Friday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host UNC Asheville from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
