Spartanburg, S.C. – Limited to only five players due to various injuries, the USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a 4-1 loss to Nicholls State Saturday from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Upstate duo of Isabel von Stryk and Anna Zoske took down Stephanie Barnett and Klara Skopac of Nicholls State 8-5 from the No. 1 doubles position to give the Spartans the early momentum. Nicholls State fought back in the next match and claimed an 8-4 at No. 2 when Isla Brock and Emma Kranendonk defeated Taylor Cohen and Sarah Vande Berg. The Colonels won at No. 3 and took the point by default as Upstate was unable to field a team to face them.
Brock put Nicholls State ahead 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Lindsey Buenger at the No. 5 singles position. Von Stryk cut the Nicholls State lead in half when she defeated Barnett 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1. Kateryna Nakonechna gave the Colonels a 3-1 edge following her 6-4, 7-5 win over Taylor Cohen at No. 3, and Nicholls State clinched the win with a forfeit victory at No. 6 due to lack of players on the Upstate side.
Upstate returns to action March 14 at 10 a.m. when the Spartans welcome Stetson to the Upstate Tennis Complex to open Atlantic Sun Conference play.
