Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 setback to Stetson Friday afternoon in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Stetson captured the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead, beginning with an 8-1 win at the No. 1 position by Diana Bukajeva and Isabella Fernandez over Isabel von Stryk and Anna Zoske. Eveline Lepinany and Lindsey Cable clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Ana Baran and Talia Rojas at No. 3.
Von Stryk knotted the match 1-1 when she turned in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bukajeva from the No. 1 singles position, but Fernandez regained the lead for Stetson with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Rojas at No. 3.
Carolina Meregalli gave the Hatters a 3-1 advantage following her 6-0, 6-1 win over Baran at No. 6, and MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell sealed the win for Stetson with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sarah Vande Berg from the No. 4 position.
Upstate puts the finishing touches on its opening weekend of conference play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Florida Gulf Coast from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
