Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun action from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Johanna Sterkel and Bettina Botha gave Florida Gulf Coast the early momentum when they turned in an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 doubles position over Sarah Vande Berg and Lindsey Buenger. The Eagles would go on to win the point and take a 1-0 lead when Sarah Means and Elizabeth Means defeated Isabel von Stryk and Anna Zoske 8-5 at No. 1.
Botha put Florida Gulf Coast ahead 2-0 following her 6-1, 3-0 singles win over an injured Ana Baran at No. 6. Candela Munoz Giron gave the Eagles a 3-0 advantage with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Vande Berg at No. 4, while Sterkel clinched the victory after posting a 6-0, 6-0 win over Talia Rojas from the No. 3 position.
Upstate returns to action March 21 when the Spartans travel to Nashville, Tenn., to face Lipscomb.
