Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team saw its three-match win streak come to an end following a 5-2 setback to North Florida Sunday afternoon from the UNF Tennis Complex.
North Florida won the first two doubles matches to win the point and take an early 1-0 lead. Caio Gomes and Yannick Zuern defeated Matthias Kidler and Gonzalo Blanco 8-3 from the No. 1 position, while Mark Hamill and Norbert Nemcsek clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Rajanvir Dharni and Pedro Carvalho at No. 3.
Dharni tied the score 1-1 when he bested Hamill 6-1, 6-1 in singles play from the No. 6 position. Nemcsek regained the lead for North Florida following his 6-0, 6-4 victory over Ramon Simonetti at No. 2. Zuern put the Ospreys out in front 3-1 after his 6-4, 6-1 win over Blanco at No. 3.
Zachary Goldberg sealed the victory for North Florida with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Yvon Haessig at No. 5. Upstate sophomore Jamie Yates picked up a win later in the match when he turned in a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Bernard Craveiro at No. 5.
Upstate returns to action Friday at 1 p.m. when the Spartans step out of conference to face Tennessee Tech. The match will be played in Johnson City, Tenn., at ETSU's Buddy Hartsell Courts.
