Women's Tennis Falls at North Florida, Georgia Southern

Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a pair of defeats Saturday afternoon, falling 4-0 at North Florida and 4-0 at Georgia Southern.

In the first match of the day, Upstate and North Florida elected to start with singles play since both teams had a second match later in the afternoon. Upstate and North Florida were originally scheduled to play on Saturday, but heavy rains in the Jacksonville area forced the postponement.

Taylor Hollander put North Florida ahead 1-0 when she defeated Talia Rojas 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 4 position. Rebeca Pereira gave the Ospreys a 2-0 edge following her 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sarah Vande Berg at No. 6.

Esther Zuniga increased the North Florida lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Taylor Cohen at No. 3, while Mariella Calderon clinched the match for the Ospreys with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lindsey Buenger at No. 5.

The second match of the day saw Upstate fall behind Georgia Southern 1-0 after the Eagles won the doubles point. Jordana Klein and Mary Phillips Smith posted an 8-1 win over Vande Berg and Buenger at No. 3 before Giulia Riepe and Stephanie Woods captured an 8-5 victory over Rojas and Cohen at No. 2.

Woods went on to put Georgia Southern ahead 2-0 following her 6-2, 6-1 singles win over Rojas at No. 4. Riepe turned in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Buenger at No. 5, while Smith won the deciding point by picking up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Vande Berg at the No. 6 position.

Upstate returns to action Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Spartans travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to take on ETSU.
