Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team clinched a spot in next week's Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament following a 7-0 shutout of Kennesaw State Saturday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate earned the No. 5 overall seed and will face fourth-seeded Stetson Thursday at 9 a.m. from North Florida's UNF Tennis Complex.
The Spartans fell behind early in doubles play when David Durham and Alex Pena of Kennesaw State knocked off Rajanvir Dharni and Pedro Carvalho 8-4 from the No. 4 position. Ramon Simonetti and Yvon Haessig answered for Upstate and turned in an 8-5 victory over Simon Pritchard and Louis Theodor at No. 2 to keep Upstate in contention for the point. Matthias Kidler and Gonzalo Blanco completed the comeback and clinched the point for the Spartans following an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Jorge Wilton and Maksim Yorsh.
Simonetti gave Upstate a 2-0 advantage when he defeated Yorsh 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 2 singles position, while Jamie Yates upped the lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Theodor at No. 4. Haessig sealed the victory and a bid to the conference tournament when he downed Jake Bouchillon 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6.
Dharni was also victorious for the Spartans, posting a 6-0, 6-7, 10-6 win over David Durham at No. 5, and Blanco picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 win over Wilton at No. 3. Kidler completed the shutout following his 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 win over Pritchard at No. 1.
