Highland Heights, Ky. – Sam Kysor delivered the game-winning RBI single in the top of the 16th inning to lift the USC Upstate to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Northern Kentucky in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon from Friendship Field.
Kysor, who entered the game in the 11th inning, picked up his first RBI since March 12 with an infield single off the glove of shortstop Kyle Colletta that allowed Tyler Lesch to score from second base. Lesch reached with a one-out single through the left side and would take second one batter later on a groundout on the infield.
Upstate reliever Erik Samples picked up his second win in as many days and improved to 5-1 after pitching the final 5.1 innings and allowing just four hits. Starting pitcher David Roseboom pitched a career-long 10.2 innings and gave up just two runs on nine hits to go along with seven strikeouts.
Northern Kentucky reliever Jake Shaw (2-4) gave up one run on two hits in two inning of work and took the loss. Starting pitcher Wendell Wright pitched the first six innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Jordan Procyshen gave Northern Kentucky a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single to right-centerfield. Second baseman Zac Asman led off the frame with a single to right and moved to third two batters later on a double by Cody Kuzniczci.
Upstate put a rally together in the seventh inning and struck for a pair of runs to tie the game 2-2 on a pinch-hit single from Brian Thompson. Back-to-back walks to Lesch and Samples put the first two runners on, but a force out at third on a bunt by Zach Krider in the following at-bat left runners on first and second with one out. After a groundout on the infield for the second out, Stephen Dowling drew a walk to load the bases before Thompson laced a single up the middle to score Samples and Krider.
Northern Kentucky nearly scored the game-winning run in the 15th on a single from Cole Bauml, but Dowling fired a strike from left field that reached Jordan Miller in time to tag out Colletta at the plate.
Upstate and Northern Kentucky put the finishing touches on a three-game series Sunday at noon. The Spartans will be in search of their first conference series sweep of the season.
