Highland Heights, Ky. – Kyle Colletta delivered the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to lift Northern Kentucky to a 4-3 victory over USC Upstate Sunday in the final game of a three-game series from Friendship Field.
Josh Myers reached with a one-out single to center and advanced to second in the following at-bat when David Head was hit by a pitch. After Myers stole third base, Colletta picked up his second hit of the game with a shot down the right field line to score Myers with the game-winning run.
Northern Kentucky reliever Evan Korson (1-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on five hits in five innings on the hill.
Zach Mitchell (1-4) surrendered one run in one inning and took the loss. Upstate starter Zac Manuppelli lasted six innings and gave up two runs on six hits.
Tyler Lesch finished 3-for-6 with one run scored for his fourth game of the season with at least three hits, while Dowling added a pair of hits and a run scored for Upstate.
Upstate capitalized on two fielding errors on the Northern Kentucky infield in the second inning to plate a pair of runs and open up a 2-0 lead. Dowling reached on throwing error by third baseman Brad Bohlen to open the inning and moved to second when AJ Mackey followed with a walk. Daniel Fickas then moved both runners up one base with his team-leading seventh sacrifice bunt of the season.
Norse starting pitcher Adam Jafine retired Jordan Miller in the next at-bat, but walked Dylan Woods on four pitches to load the bases with one out. Lesch followed with a grounder to the right side to score Dowling from third, and an errant throw by first baseman Jordan Procyshen to Jafine covering at first allowed Mackey to score the second run.
Northern Kentucky sent eight men to the plate and scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Cole Bauml opened the inning with a single to right field before advancing to second in the next at-bat on a single through the left side from Cody Kuzniczci. Procyshen loaded the bases thereafter with a bunt single, and Caleb Kellogg drove in the first run of the frame with a groundout to the right side. Head added an RBI infield single two batters later to account for the second run.
Upstate regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Erik Samples laced his team-leading 14th double of the season down the left field line to plate Lesch from first. Lesch reached in the previous at-bat on a two-out single up the middle.
Upstate returns to the diamond Tuesday at 6 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Asheville, N.C., to take on UNC Asheville from Greenwood Baseball Field.
