Upstate Men's Tennis Comes up Short at ETSU

Johnson City, Tenn. – Playing in its final conference road match of the season, the USC Upstate men's tennis team suffered a 6-1 loss at ETSU Saturday afternoon from the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.

The ETSU duo of Sebastian Yllera and Conner Huertas kicked off doubles play with an 8-1 win over Rajanvir Dharni and Yvon Haessig from the No. 3 position to give the Buccaneers some early momentum. Upstate, however, responded to win the next match when Matthias Kidler and Gonzalo Blanco knocked off Diego Nunez and Ismael Merino 8-7 (7-0) at No. 1. In the deciding match, David Biosca and Roger Ordeig of ETSU defeated Jamie Yates and Ramon Simonetti 8-6 at No. 2 to win the point for the Buccaneers.

Biosca gave ETSU a 2-0 lead when he turned in a 6-0, 6-1 singles victory over Kidler from the No. 1 position. Huertas extended the lead to 3-0 following his 6-2, 6-4 win over Yates at the No. 4 position before Yllera sealed the win for ETSU with a 6-3, 7-4 victory over Blanco at No. 3.

Later in the match, Haessig picked up a victory at No. 6 when he bested Ordeig 6-2, 6-3.

Upstate returns to the court Friday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host Mercer from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
