Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Lipscomb Bisons Friday evening in A-Sun action from Allen Arena.
Upstate drops to 12-10 overall and 0-6 against league opponents, while Lipscomb moves to 13-7 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
Lexi Gober tallied her 11th double-double of the season after finishing the match with 11 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Callie Yeargin and Kayla Eversgerd led the Spartans offensively with six kills each, while Yeargin added 11 digs along with Kaleigh Kelley.
Jewell Dobson led all players with 13 kills for the Bisons and Brittany Thomas contributed a match-high 21 digs. Kayla Ostrom dished out 39 assists.
Upstate trailed 7-6 early in the first set as Gober's service ace capped a stretch of three straight points. Lipscomb followed with a 12-3 run to break the set open at 18-10 on Dobson's kill. The Spartans rallied late to cut their deficit to 20-17 courtesy of a 7-2 run. Koelling's kill put Upstate to within three. The Bisons limited the Spartans to three points after that as Lauren Anderson's kill gave them the 25-20 win.
The teams traded the opening 18 points of the second set with Carlyle Nusbaum evening the score at 9-9 with her kill. An attack error by Molly Spitznagle and Eversgerd's kill gave Upstate a 13-11 lead, and Yeargin later extended its advantage to 18-15 on her kill. Lipscomb fought back to tie the score 18-18, but the Spartans answered with a 5-2 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Bisons came back to sit at set point, 25-24, following a kill by Nusbaum. Madison Haake responded with a kill to make it 25-25, only to see Lipscomb score the last two points to win 27-25.
Upstate stayed within striking distance early in the third set as it trailed 9-7 on Brittnay Estes' attack error. The Bisons used an 11-6 run to increase their lead to 20-13 on Dobson's kill, forcing a Spartan timeout. Lipscomb scored the final four points to take the set 25-14 and win the match 3-0.
Upstate closes out its four-match road trip on Sunday afternoon against NJIT at 12:00 p.m.
