Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 21-25) decision to the Lipscomb Bisons Friday evening inside the Hodge Center as Madison Haake picked up her 10th double-double of the season for the Spartans.
Upstate falls to 13-12 overall and 1-8 in the A-Sun, while Lipscomb improved to 16-8 on the season and 8-1 in league play.
Haake led the Spartans with 15 assists and 12 digs to give her ten double-doubles for the season. Callie Yeargin recorded a team-high eight kills offensively for Upstate while Lexi Gober added 11 digs.
Carlyle Nusbaum recorded a match-high 23 kills for the Bisons and Brittnay Estes contributed 15. Kayla Ostrom dished out 50 assists while Brittany Thomas led all players with 21 digs.
Upstate split the opening 16 points of the first set and took its first lead the following play at 9-8 on a bad set by Ostrom. Lipscomb answered with an 8-1 run to go in front 16-10 on a kill from Estes. The Bisons led by as many as 10 twice with the last coming as Nusbaum won the set for Lipscomb with her kill to put the score at 25-15.
Kayla Eversgerd trimmed the Spartans deficit to 9-8 early in the second set with her kill as they stayed within two points to start. The Bisons used a 10-2 run to take a 19-10 lead that was capped by Lauren Anderson's kill. Upstate got as close as 20-13 after that before Lipscomb captured the set at 25-16 on Nusbaum's kill.
The teams traded the initial 18 points of the third set with the Spartans taking their largest lead at 11-9 on a combination block from Javon Gates and Emily Koelling. The Bisons responded to take the lead back at 14-12, but Upstate responded with four straight points to go ahead 16-14 after Haake's kill. The Spartans kept their two-point advantage until Nusbaum gave Lipscomb a 19-18 lead following her kill. With the score tied at 20-20 late, the Bisons outscored Upstate 5-1 over the final six points to win the set 25-21 on a block by Estes and Molly Spitznagle, giving Lipscomb the 3-0 match victory.
The Spartans return to the Hodge Center Saturday afternoon against NJIT at 3 p.m. The match will be televised on ESPN3.
