Clinton, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team fell just short in its comeback attempt Wednesday in a 4-3 loss at Presbyterian from the Templeton Tennis Courts.

The Blue Hose claimed the first point of the match after winning the doubles point with victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Ben Kelly and Ryan Miller earned an 8-5 win over Viktor Selander and Rajanvir Dharni before Brandon Mills and Lukas Luckemeier bested Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion 8-4 at No. 3.

Upstate junior Ramon Simonetti tied the score 1-1 when he posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Miller from the No. 1 singles position. After Presbyterian took matches at No. 4 and No. 5 to go ahead 3-1, Selander defeated Alexander Lykou 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Bennion kept Upstate alive and tied the score 3-3 following his 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 over Mills at No. 6 for his first career singles victory. Diego Manzanas, however, spoiled the Upstate comeback bid when he clinched the match for the Blue Hose with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Jamie Yates.

Upstate puts the finishing touches on a six-match road trip Feb. 21 when the Spartans travel to Davidson, N.C., to take on Davidson from the Covington Tennis Courts.
