Davidson, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team closed its six-match road trip with a 4-2 loss at Davidson Saturday from the Knobloch Tennis Center.
USC Upstate built a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles points following victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Spartan freshmen Felix Ewers and Matt Bennion won the first match when they bested Shamael and Chaudhry and Ricky Saad 8-4 at No. 3. Jamie Yates and Viktor Selander clinched the point with an 8-6 win over Artem Khrapko and David Hager at No. 2.
Chaudhry pulled Davidson even with Upstate following his 6-1, 6-2 singles victory over Ramon Simonetti at No. 1. Khrapko put the Wildcats ahead 2-1 after downing Selander 6-3, 6-4 from the No. 2 position.
Davidson won its third straight singles match following a 7-6, 6-0 victory by J.B. Gough over Yates at No. 3, but Ignacio Garrido pulled Upstate within one point when he turned in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Saad at No. 4.
Jordan Hart sealed the win for Davidson with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Bennion at No. 6.
Upstate returns to the court Feb. 28 when the Spartans host Chattanooga at 10 a.m. and Georgia State at 3 p.m. from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
