Winthrop Slips by Upstate in Non-Conference Action

Rock Hill, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback at Winthrop Friday afternoon in non-conference action from Memorial Courts.

Upstate took control early on and built a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point by claiming victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 position. Juniors Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates turned in an 8-4 win over Dylan Comerford and Peter Nagovnak at No. 1, while freshmen Matt Bennion and Felix Ewers registered an 8-7 victory over Ruben Franzanti and Michael Chen.

Winthrop responded by winning four of six singles matches en route to its second straight victory. Simonetti, however, picked up his second win of the match when he bested Tremayne Mitchell 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 1 position.

Yates also earned a second win following his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nagovnak from the No. 3 position.

Upstate returns to action Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Clinton, S.C., to take on Presbyterian.
