Spartans Fall to Gardner-Webb in Non-Conference Play

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team saw its two-match winning streak snapped Saturday after falling 6-1 to Gardner-Webb in non-conference action from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

The Gardner-Webb duo of Rokia Sacko and Mary Walker Mixon captured the first victory of the match when they defeated Anna Zoske and Sarah Vande Berg 8-4 from the No. 2 doubles position. Catherine White and Sarah Rieckmann followed by downing Sharlee Deshmukh and Nina Roell 8-5 at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs.

In the final doubles match, Upstate senior Isabel von Stryk and freshman Nona Ruppert ran their winning streak to seven following an 8-4 victory over Yasmin Doost and Stina Magnusson at No. 1.

White put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0 when she turned in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Deshmukh at No. 5, and Mixon knocked off Vande Berg 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.

Von Stryk cut the lead to 3-1 and won her eighth straight singles match in the process by posting a 6-4, 6-0 win over Doost at No. 1.

Magnusson clinched the match for Gardner-Webb after she downed Zoske 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in a back-and-forth match at No. 3.

Upstate returns to action Tuesday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host Lamar from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
