Spartans Cruise to Win Over Stetson in A-Sun Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team cruised to a 4-1 victory over Stetson in the conference opener Friday from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Upstate juniors Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates captured the first victory of the match when the duo turned in an 8-5 win over Loic Blanco and Laurynas Antropikas at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion continued the winning for the Spartans whey they downed Simon Julin and Graham Ball at No. 3 to clinch the point.

Freshman Felix Ewers put the Spartans ahead 2-0 with his 6-3, 6-2 singles win over Gonzalo Arroyo at No. 6. Garrido extended the lead to 3-0 following a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ball at No. 4, but a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win by Blanco over Viktor Selander at No. 2 cut the Upstate lead to 3-1.

Simonetti put Upstate back to its winning ways and clinched the win after he knocked off Antropikas 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1.

Upstate looks to improve to 2-0 in league play when the Spartans host Florida Gulf Coast Saturday at 2 p.m. from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
