Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team fell 5-2 to Florida Gulf Coast Saturday in the second A-Sun match of the year from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Jordi Vives and Eduardo Alfonzo gave Florida Gulf Coast the early advantage when the duo turned in an 8-3 doubles win over Viktor Selander and Felix Ewers from the No. 2 position. Tianyu Bao and Austin Bates claimed an 8-6 victory over Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion at No. 3 to clinch the point for the Eagles.
Ricky Ventura gave Florida Gulf Coast a 2-0 advantage when he bested Selander 6-1, 6-1 from the No. 2 singles position. Ignacio pulled Upstate within a point after he downed Alfonzo 6-3, 7-5 from the No. 4 position.
Bao gave the Eagles a 3-1 edge with his 7-5, 7-5 win over Jamie Yates at No. 3 before Vives sealed the win following 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Ramon Simonetti at No. 1.
Ewers closed the match with a victory for Upstate when he turned in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 over Lucas Vaz at No. 6.
Upstate returns to the court Wednesday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans host Elon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
