Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Charlotte Monday in non-conference action from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Charlotte built a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point with victories from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt turned in the first win of the match when they defeated Anna Zoske and Sarah Vande Berg 8-2 at No. 3. Victoria Pahlett and Fleur Holtkamp clinched the point following an 8-6 victory over Isabel von Stryk and Nona Ruppert at No. 1.
Baker put the 49ers ahead 2-0 after she downed Sharlee Deshmukh 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 5 singles position, while Holtkamp pushed the lead to 3-0 after she bested Nina Roell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Natsuko Takayanagi won the third consecutive match for Charlotte and clinched the match in the process with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Vande Berg at No. 6.
Upstate closed the match by winning the final two singles matches, beginning with Ruppert winning her third straight match with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 over Vonderschmidt at No. 2. Von Stryk followed with her team-leading 10th win of the season when she defeated Pahlett 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1.
The Spartans resume conference play Saturday at 10 a.m. when the Spartans travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida.
