Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 69 North Florida Saturday afternoon from the UNF Tennis Complex.
Upstate dropped its first doubles match of the day after falling 8-2 at No. 2, but the Spartans answered by winning the next two to claim the point and go ahead 1-0. Freshmen Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion bested Julian Bradley and Alberto De Meo 8-1 at No. 3, and Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates downed Norbert Nemcsek and Yannick Zuern 8-6 at the No. 1 position.
De Meo pulled North Florida even when he defeated Felix Ewers 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 6 position, but Garrido regained the lead for the Spartans following his 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lasse Muscheites.
Zach Goldberg tied the match for the Ospreys after knocking off Bennion 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5, and Bradley gave North Florida its first lead of the day with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Yates at No. 3. Zuern completed the comeback for the Ospreys when he beat Viktor Selander 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2.
Upstate steps out of conference Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Statesboro, Ga., to take on Georgia Southern from the Hanner Tennis Complex.
