Spartans Come Up Short at North Florida

Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at North Florida Saturday from the UNF Tennis Complex.

Rebeca Pereira and Luise Intert opened play with an 8-2 doubles victory over Nona Ruppert and Nina Roell from the No. 2 position, while Marina Cunningham and Michelle Valdez followed with an 8-2 win over Sharlee Deshmukh and Sarah Vande Berg at No. 3 to clinch the point.

Upstate senior Isabel von Stryk and sophomore Anna Zoske finished doubles play with an 8-7 (6-4) win over Taylor Hollander and Esther Zuniga from the No. 1 position.

Pereira put North Florida ahead 2-0 following her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Vande Berg at No. 6 singles, and Intert gave the Ospreys a 3-0 advantage when she downed Deshmukh 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.

Valdez sealed the match for North Florida with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Ruppert at No. 2.

Von Stryk registered her 11th win of the season later in the match with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 win over Zuniga at No. 1.

Upstate steps out of conference Sunday at 10 a.m. when the Spartans travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern from the Hanner Tennis Complex.
