Statesboro, Ga. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team fell 4-1 to Georgia Southern Sunday in non-conference action from the Hanner Tennis Complex.
Georgia Southern won the doubles point following victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Jordana Klein and Giulia Riepe claimed the first win of the match when they defeated Sharlee Deshmukh and Sarah Vande Berg 8-3 from No. 3. Francisca Norregaard and Daria Vasekina clinched the point following an 8-3 win over Nina Roell and Nona Ruppert at No. 2.
Mary Phillips Smith put the Eagles ahead 2-0 after defeating Ruppert 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2, but Isabel von Stryk cut the Upstate deficit in half following her 6-2, 6-0 win over Klein at No 1.
Vasekina pushed the lead back to two points for Georgia Southern when she knocked off Roell 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4, and Riepe clinched the match by earning the fourth point by defeating Anna Zoske 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3.
Upstate returns to action Thursday at 11 a.m. when the Spartans travel to Nashville, Tenn., to face Lipscomb.
