Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 setback to crosstown rival Wofford Friday afternoon from the USC Upstate tennis complex.
Wofford built a 1-0 lead when it captured the doubles point following victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Despite dropping the point, senior Isabel von Stryk and freshman Nona Ruppert posted a 9-7 win over Kalli Karas and Lauren Reid at No. 1.
Samantha Russell put Wofford ahead 2-0 when she won by default over Nina Roell at No. 4 singles. Reid turned in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sharlee Deshmukh at No. 5 to put the Terriers ahead 3-0, but Ruppert registered her second win of the match following a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Audrey Coventry at No. 2.
Mareli Sanchez clinched the match for Wofford after defeating Sarah Vande Berg 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
Von Stryk won her fifth straight match with a 7-5, 6-7, 10-6 victory over Catherine Martin and No. 1, while Anna Zoske was also victorious after posting a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Karas at No. 3.
Upstate returns to action Sunday at 8 a.m. when the Spartans face Slippery Rock from Hilton Head Island, S.C.
