Thibodaux, La. – Nicholls State won three straight singles matches to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 4-3 victory over the USC Upstate men's tennis team Monday from the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Nicholls State built a 1-0 lead by winning doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions. The Spartan duo of Matt Bennion and Ignacio Garrido, however, were victorious at No. 3 by posting an 8-6 win over Sam Meessen and Evan Karatzas.
Upstate junior Ramon Simonetti pulled the Spartans even when he picked up a point by winning his singles match over Partha Adavelly 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Meessen regained the lead for Nicholls State when he defeated Rajanvir Dharni 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.
Bernard Wezeman put the Colonels ahead 3-1 following his 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Garrido and No. 4, and Lukas Clemens clinched the win by downing Felix Ewers 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5.
Upstate closed the match with individual victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions, as Viktor Selander turned in a 6-4, 6-2 win over Karatzas at No. 2 before Bennion knocked off Max Sinn 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 6.
Upstate returns to the court Thursday at 12 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB.
