Spartans Down Baldwin Wallace for Second Straight Shutout

Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team registered its second straight shutout by defeating Baldwin Wallace University 7-0 Monday evening.

The Spartans posted shutouts in all three doubles matches to win the point and build a 1-0 advantage. Senior Isabel von Stryk and freshman Nona Ruppert started the winning with an 8-0 victory over Kelsey Blatt and Mackenzie Donalson and at No. 1.

Anna Zoske and partner Sharlee Deshmukh bested Mackenzi Baker and Claire Watts 8-0 at No. 2 before Nina Roell and Sarah Vande Berg defeated Shannon Finkenthal and Haley Peterson 8-0 at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

Von Stryk put the Spartans ahead 2-0 and won her seventh consecutive singles match in the process with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Blatt at No. 1. Zoske gave Upstate a 2-0 advantage following her 6-0, 6-0 win over Donalson at No. 3, and Ruppert clinched the win when she defeated Watts 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

Roell won her second straight match after downing Peterson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, and Vande Berg accomplished the same feat with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Baker at No. 6. Deshmukh completed the shutout with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Finkenthal at No. 5.

Upstate returns home Saturday at 1 p.m. to host Gardner-Webb from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
