Kennesaw State Knocks Off Upstate in Regular Season Finale

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by Kennesaw State Saturday on Senior Day from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Kennesaw State used an 8-1 victory by Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghaus over Nona Ruppert and Anna Zoske at No. 1 doubles to go along with a default win at No. 3 to build a 1-0 lead.

Hueckinghaus put Kennesaw State ahead 2-0 with her 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over Ruppert, and Cristina Martin gave the Owls a 3-0 advantage following her 6-3, 6-0 victory over Sharlee Deshmukh at No. 5.

Zoske scored a point for Upstate when she downed Alexandra Mercado 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3, and Isabel von Stryk turned in a 7-5, 6-4 win over Stein at No. 1 in her final home match of her career to pull Upstate within one point.

Ashleigh De Wet, however, spoiled the Upstate comeback attempt when she defeated Sarah Vande Berg 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the match for Kennesaw State.
