Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team secured its place in the A-Sun Tournament semifinals following its 4-0 victory over No. 6 seed Northern Kentucky Friday from the UNF Tennis Complex.
The third-seeded Spartans will face No. 2 seed North Florida Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Upstate built a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point following victories from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshmen Felix Ewers and Matt Bennion turned in an 8-4 win over Nick Lang and Jack Carney, and Ignacio Garrido and Viktor Selander clinched the point with an 8-5 victory over Adrian Isache and Christopher Angulo at No. 2.
Garrido put Upstate ahead 2-0 when he won his ninth consecutive match following a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Isache at No. 4, and Ramon Simonetti gave the Spartans a 3-0 advantage when he defeated Mate Virag 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1.
Jamie Yates clinched the match for Upstate with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jody Maginley at No. 3.
