Clinton, S.C. – Two second half goals proved to be the difference for Presbyterian in a 3-1 victory over USC Upstate Friday in non-conference action from Martin Stadium.
Kelsey Yeager gave the Blue Hose an early 1-0 lead when her header found the back of the Upstate net in the 15th minute. Louise McGirt picked up an assist on the play after her corner kick into the Spartan box allowed Yeager to register her first goal of the season.
Chandler Carter followed suit in the 28th minute with her first goal of the season to give Presbyterian a 2-0 advantage. Maddy Clark started the scoring opportunity with a cross behind the Upstate back line that found a streaking Carter for a shot to her left.
Sophie Cobb scored an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to put Presbyterian ahead 3-0 with her first goal of the season. Cobb intercepted a pass deep in Upstate territory and finished with a shot that beat a diving Ellen Bright. Bright finished with a season-high nine saves and leads the Atlantic Sun with 41.
Upstate freshman Kate Winegarner put the Spartans on the board with a goal in the 88th minute to cut the deficit to 3-1. Winegarner received a pass just outside the Presbyterian box and sent a shot on goal that was initially saved by Cadye Picklesimer, but Winegarner followed her shot and sent the loose ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Upstate returns to action Sunday at noon when the Spartans host Penn from County University Soccer Stadium.
