Spartan Rally Comes up Short at Davidson

Davidson, N.C. – Alec Rotunda had the game-winning goal late in the second half and Davidson snapped a four-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over USC Upstate Friday evening from Alumni Soccer Field.

Rotunda put the Wildcats ahead 2-0 in the 79th minute with a header off a feed from Jess Smith for his second goal of the season. Christian Fechter was also credited with an assist after he started the scoring opportunity with a pass to Smith.

Spartan midfielder Leon Schwarzer cut the lead in half with an unassisted goal in the 86th minute for his sixth goal of the season. Schwarzer capitalized off a misplay from Davidson keeper Matt Pacifici for his fourth goal in the last three games. Schwarzer has at least one point in six straight games.

Valeriy Sviderskiy started the scoring for Davidson in the 25th minute with his team-leading third goal of the season. Sviderskiy received a pass from Cort Coxhead and dribbled past an Upstate defender for a shot into the right corner of the net.

Upstate returns to the pitch Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Lipscomb to County University Soccer Stadium for the beginning of Atlantic Sun Conference play.
