Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team opened A-Sun play on Wednesday evening with a 3-0 loss to the Lipscomb Bisons at County University Soccer Stadium.
Upstate falls to 4-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, while Lipscomb improves to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play.
In a match that was delayed one hour and 40 minutes in the second half, the Bisons held a 16-9 advantage in shots and 8-2 in shots on-goal. Lipscomb also led 6-3 in corner kicks.
The Bisons held a 2-0 lead heading into halftime on goals from Matt Kerridge and Logan Paynter. Kerridge put Lipscomb ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute on his third goal of the season after a failed clear attempt from the Spartan defense. Paynter's free kick following an Upstate yellow card in the 30th minute netted his fourth goal of the year and gave the Bisons a 2-0 lead.
The weather delay came less than 20 minutes into the second half and caused close to a two-hour delay in the match. Lipscomb added another goal in the 87th minute on Eduardo Reza's penalty kick to give it a 3-0 lead.
Heiko Allmendinger led the Spartans with three shots in the match while Hassan Haddad added five saves. Paynter had a team-high four shot attempts for the Bisons and Micah Bledsoe tallied one save.
Upstate is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when it heads to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Jacksonville at 7:00 p.m.
