Greenville, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat at Furman on Sunday afternoon in its first match of the 2016 spring season at the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman improves to 1-2 on the season while Upstate drops to 0-1.
The Paladins won two of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Ansley Speaks and Katarina Weymouth defeated Anna Zoske and Carol Sigaki 6-4 at the top doubles position with Karlee Bryde and Harper Caswell earning a 6-0 win at number three doubles over Ruby Kubac and Anna Nemeth. Filippa Ericson and Vale Zarama were leading Blair Martin and Gabby Rodriguez 5-4 at the number two position when the match was halted after Furman clinched the doubles point.
Speaks was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Zoske at the number one singles position while Weymouth defeated Zarama 6-1, 6-2 at the number two postion. At number three singles, Martin defeated Ericson 6-1, 6-4 with Bryde claiming a 6-3, 6-0 decision at the fourth position. Rodriguez was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Nemeth at the fifth position followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win for Caswell over Kubac.
Upstate returns to action on Saturday at East Tennessee State at 2 p.m.
