Upstate Suffers 3-0 Setback at #11 Florida Gulf Coast

Fort Myers, Fla. – The USC Upstate men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the 11th-ranked Florida Gulf Coast Eagles Saturday evening in ASUN action from the FGCU Soccer Complex.

Upstate falls to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference, while Florida Gulf Coast improves to 11-3-1 on the season and 3-1 in league play.

STATS OF THE MATCH

  • The Eagles held a 13-7 advantage in shots highlighted a 7-3 margin in the first half.
  • Joel Bunting led the Spartans offensively with three shots including two on-goal.
  • Arion Sobers-Assue had a team-high four shots for Florida Gulf Coast and attempted two on-net along with Albert Ruiz.
  • Davis Smith had two saves for Upstate while Jared Brown grabbed three for the Eagles.
  • The Spartans took a total of six corner kicks in the match while FGCU had four.
FLORIDA GULF COAST GOALS
  • Ruiz and Sobers-Assue teamed up for the Eagles first two goals of the contest beginning in the 27th minute when Ruiz received a pass from Sobers-Assue at the top of the 18-yard box. Ruiz beat one defender and scored right side past Smith. (USC Upstate 0, FGCU 1)
  • Ruiz recorded his second goal of the match in the 31st minute as Sobers-Assue also picked up his second assist. Sobers-Assue had the initial attempt but Smith came up with the save diving to his right. Ruiz got the rebound and scored near side. (USC Upstate 0, FGCU 2)
  • Sobers-Assue scored his first goal of the match in the 54th minute. FGCU gained possession of the ball at midfield as Eli Roubos made a quick pass to Sobers-Assue, who took several dribbles and scored left side from 20 yards out. (USC Upstate 0, FGCU 3)

  • Upstate concludes its regular season at home next Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. as it hosts North Florida.
  • The Spartans will be holding their Senior Night festivities prior to the match.
