Spartanburg, S.C. – Josh Cuthbertson and Malik Moore each scored over 20 points as the USC Upstate men's basketball team posted a season-best 59.1 percent mark behind the 3-point line en route to a 76-48 non-conference victory over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose Tuesday evening inside the Hodge Center.
Upstate improves to 7-5 on the season while Presbyterian College falls to 3-6 overall.
Cuthbertson finished with a career-high 22 points for the Spartans while Moore added 21. Ramel Thompkins was the third Upstate player to score in double-figures after contributing 11 points. Darius Moore led the Blue Hose with 14 points.
GAME BREAKDOWN
- The Spartans scored the game's first six points and led 6-0 less than two minutes into the contest after back-to-back 3-pointers from Cuthbertson and Moore.
- Presbyterian College answered with two straight field goals from Ed Drew to cut Upstate's lead to 6-4, but the Spartans responded with five consecutive points from Thompkins and Cuthbertson to extend their lead out to 11-4 with just over 16 minutes to go in the first half.
- After a jumper from Armel TeTe made it an 11-8 game, Upstate would go on a 19-0 run covering a span of 7:10 and led 30-8 at the 5:48 mark on a layup by Michael Buchanan.
- The Spartans led by as many as 25 points in the opening half when Cuthbertson's layup pushed their lead out to 37-12 with 4:12 left.
- The Blue Hose finished the first half on a 10-0 run over the last 3:52 and Upstate went into halftime leading 37-22.
- Presbyterian College would get as close as 15 points the rest of the way after the halftime break when Jo'Vontae Millner connected on a pair of free-throws less than two minutes into the second half as the Spartans led 39-24.
- Upstate went back ahead by 20 points two minutes later following a 3-pointer from Thompkins and put the score at 46-26.
- The Spartans used a 13-0 run that lasted 3:14 midway to take their largest lead of the game at 65-34 on a 3-pointer from Thompkins with 8:33 to go.
- Upstate led by at least 25 points the remainder of the game and tied its largest lead at 68-37 after Jure Span made a 3-pointer with 6:42 remaining.
- The Blue Hose got as close as 25 points, 72-47, at the 2:59 mark on a 3-pointer from Moore.
- The Spartans held Presbyterian College to just one point over the final 2:58 and Carson Smith put the final score at 76-48 with 40 seconds to go after his jumper.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Cuthbertson and Moore combined to score 43 of Upstate's 76 points as the duo finished the game shooting 14-of-16 from the field, 8-of-9 from 3-point range and 7-for-9 at the free-throw line.
- Cuthbertson finished two assists shy of his second double-double of the season after dishing out a game-high eight assists.
- Moore pulled down six rebounds to go with his 21 points.
- Buchanan had a team-high eight rebounds for the Spartans and Span contributed five assists.
- Millner added 12 points for the Blue Hose and Drew grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
- Upstate concluded the game shooting 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the field and out-rebounded Presbyterian College 34-32.
- The Spartans also held a 12-9 advantage in points off turnovers, 4-2 in fast break points and 12-10 in points from the bench. Both teams recorded 11 second chance points.
