Greensboro, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to the Elon Phoenix Saturday afternoon in non-conference action from the Starmount Country Club.
Upstate falls to 1-3 on the season while Elon improves to 4-3 overall.
The doubles portion was not played due to the match taking place indoors at Starmount Country Club, making the contest consist of six singles matches.
Lenhard Haupt earned the singles win for the Spartans playing at the number two position. The freshman recorded his second win of the season, and first playing at number two singles, as he defeated Felipe Sarrasague in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-1.
Upstate took two other matches into the third set with Jamie Yates and Matt Bennion. Yates opened his number three singles match by going into a first set tiebreaker, eventually falling 10-1, before taking the second 6-2 and dropping the third 6-4. At number four singles, Bennion won the first set 6-4, but fell in the next two 6-1, 6-4.
Tomas Venere, competing at the number six position, tied his match with Charlie Sullivan after winning the second set 6-3. Sullivan would take the tiebreaker with a 12-10 score.
The Spartans return to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex Wednesday, Feb. 17 to host Appalachian State at 2:30 p.m.
