Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team fell to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in non-conference action 5-2 Wednesday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate falls to 1-4 on the season while Appalachian State improves to 4-3 overall.
The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead in the match after capturing the doubles point with wins at the number one and two matches. At number three doubles, Rajanvir Dharni and Tomas Venere were tied with Zach Bost and Trey Morris 6-6, but the match went unfinished with the score 3-1 in the tiebreaker.
Appalachian State won the first three singles matches before the Spartans took the next two courtesy of back-to-back victories by Dharni and Jamie Yates. Yates, playing at the number three position for Upstate, defeated Jack Maddocks in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Dharni followed with a 6-0, 7-5 win in his number five singles match over Morris.
Jan-Willem Kleynhans gave the Mountaineers the 5-2 match victory after winning at number four singles over Matt Bennion 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
The Spartans remain at home Friday afternoon as they host Campbell at 2 p.m.
