Upstate Earns Hard-Fought 4-3 Home Victory over Campbell

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team earned its first home victory of the season Friday afternoon as the Spartans defeated the Campbell Camels 4-3 in non-conference action from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Upstate improves to 2-4 on the season while Campbell drops to 1-4 overall.

The Spartans began the match on a positive note by taking the doubles point with back-to-back 6-4 wins at the number two and three positions. After falling in the first doubles match, Upstate came back at the number two spot as Jamie Yates and Tomas Venere won over Gerard Sola and Dustin Werner. The Spartans won the doubles point as the number three duo of Matt Bennion and Rajanvir Dharni topped Lorenz Schwab and Nicolas Rakitin.

The Camels answered by winning two of the first three singles matches at number one and two. Venere, playing at number six singles, won in straight sets over Jonathan O'Neal 6-2, 7-6. Upstate captured the match after receiving wins at number three and four singles. In the number four match, Bennion earned a 7-5, 7-6 straight set victory over Werner.

Yates won the match for the Spartans as he defeated Sola, also in straight sets, at number three singles 6-4, 6-4.

Upstate will make the short trip to Clinton, S.C. Thursday, Feb. 25 to face the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at 3 p.m. from Templeton Tennis Courts.
