Seniors Lead Spartans to Victory over NJIT

Spartanburg, S.C. –Playing their final regular season home game in the Hodge Center, seniors Kristen Dickerson, Brittany Clency, Brittany Starling and Travonda Haddock each finished in double figures as the Upstate women's basketball team defeated NJIT 67-47.

Upstate concludes the 2015-16 regular season with a 19-10 record and 10-4 mark in the Atlantic Sun Conference. NJIT ends the regular season at 4-25 and 1-13.

Dickerson led Upstate with 17 points, followed by Clency with 16, Starling with 15 and Haddock with 10. Haddock recorded her second consecutive double-double as she led Upstate with 10 rebounds. Starling pulled down nine rebounds to move in a tie for fifth place on Upstate's all-time rebounds list.

Kelly Guarino scored 16 points to lead NJIT. Ronni Grandison pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Highlanders.

Upstate opened the game on a 6-0 run before a Guarino three-pointer cut the Spartan advantage in half with 6:52 to play. Back-to-back Haddock layups gave Upstate a 10-3 lead before an Olivia Dudley jumper brought the Highlanders within five with 5:59 to go. The Spartans began a 12-0 run to close the half thanks to a Starling layup and enjoyed a 24-5 advantage at the end of the opening frame.

NJIT opened the second quarter on a 7-1 run to pull within 13, 25-12, thanks to an Alana Dudley layup at the 5:57 mark. Following a Haddock jumper with 4:46 to play which gave Upstate a 32-12 lead, NJIT kept the deficit within 17 and 19 points over the next four minutes. Bailey Wensler's jumper with 24 seconds remaining gave the Spartans a 38-17 advantage before Dudley beat the buzzer with jumper to make the halftime score 38-19 in favor of Upstate.

Maria Ruban opened the third quarter with a jumper to bring NJIT within 17 before a Clency three-pointer pushed the Spartan lead back to 20, 43-23. With Upstate holding a 49-29 lead, NJIT went on a 6-0 run to pull within 14, 49-35, thanks to an Olivia Dudley layup. A'Lexxus Davis closed out the quarter with a layup to give Upstate a 51-35 lead. 

The Spartans opened the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run for a game-high 63-37 lead following a Starling layup with 6:35 to play. Upstate would lead by no fewer than 20 points for the duration of the quarter. 

Upstate went 25-for-61 (41.0%) from the field while NJIT finished 21-for-59 (35.6%). The Spartans held a 48-32 edge on the glass.

As a result of their win, Upstate will be the third seed in the 2016 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Upstate will host North Florida on Friday at a time to be determined.
