Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team opened its home schedule with a 5-2 defeat against the Winthrop Eagles Saturday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate falls to 1-2 on the season while Winthrop improves to 3-2 overall.
The Spartans fell behind 1-0 early after dropping the doubles point as the Eagles won at the number one and three positions. Jamie Yates and Tomas Venere captured a win in their number two match over Michael Chen and Ruy Teixeira 6-2.
For the second straight match, Upstate received singles victories from Yates and Rajanvir Dharni. Yates, playing at the number four spot, defeated Steven Patrick in a hard-fought three set match 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Dharni won his number five singles match in straight sets over Teixeira 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartans are at home next Friday, Feb. 12 as they host Appalachian State at 2:30 p.m.
