Upstate Rallies to Defeat North Florida 4-3 in A-Sun Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team rallied to win four singles matches and open A-Sun play on a positive note as the Spartans defeated the North Florida Ospreys 4-3 Saturday afternoon from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Upstate improves to 4-9 on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while North Florida falls to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Ospreys would take a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the number two and three doubles matches. In the number one contest, Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora were trailing 5-4 when the match was halted due to UNF winning the doubles point.

North Florida went up 3-0 after wins at the number two and six positions. The Spartans would then capture the next four matches starting with Ignacio Garrido winning his number five match over Zach Goldberg in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Jamie Yates followed in the number three match with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Julian Bradley. Lenhard Haupt evened the match at 3-3 when he defeated Jonathan Deautriell 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) in the number four contest.

Simonetti won the match for Upstate, and completed the comeback, following his victory in the number one singles match. Simonetti held off Yannick Zuern in a three-set thriller 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Mar. 19 with a non-conference road match against UNC Asheville at 1 p.m.
