Upstate Wins Second Straight, Defeats UNC Asheville on the Road 4-3

Asheville, N.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team won its second straight match Saturday afternoon as the Spartans stepped out of conference play to earn a 4-3 road victory against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs from the Asheville Racquet Club.

The Spartans have now won three of their last four matches and improve to 5-9 on the season. With the loss, UNC Asheville falls to 5-7 overall.

Upstate earned a pair of 6-4 victories to win the doubles point after taking the number one and three matches. The Bulldogs took the number two doubles match before the Spartans answered by winning the next two to go ahead 1-0. Ramon Simonetti and Ignacio Garrido, playing at number one doubles, started things for Upstate by winning 6-4 over Alex Croker and Brett Landau. In the number three contest, Lenhard Haupt and Tomas Venere won the doubles point after also defeating Thomas Orestis-Panoulas and Reid Dillon by a 6-4 score.

Matt Bennion earned his second straight singles win and put the Spartans ahead 2-0 after a straight set triumph in the number five singles match. Bennion topped Dillon by a score of 6-1, 6-1. After UNCA won at number four, Simonetti also picked up his second consecutive win 6-1, 6-3 over Croker.

Venere gave Upstate the victory when he won at the number six singles position in straight sets against Colin Apt 7-5, 6-2.

The Spartans return to A-Sun competition on Thursday, Mar. 24 as it hosts Stetson at 2 p.m.
