Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team closed out non-conference play Saturday afternoon by dropping a 6-1 decision to the Georgia Southern Eagles from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate falls to 5-11 on the season while Georgia Southern improves to 12-5.
The Eagles captured the first two doubles matches to take the point and lead the Spartans 1-0 heading into singles competition. One doubles match went unfinished as Ankush Arora and Jamies Yates were trailing in their number two contest 6-5 to Dani Casablancas and Eddie Landin when the match was halted.
Upstate had four of its six singles matches last three sets with Arora earning a win in the number two matchup. The freshman took the first set over JC Alcala 6-1 before Alcala evened the match after taking set two 6-3. Arora held off Alcala in the third set 7-5 to give the Spartans their first point of the match.
Yates and Ramon Simonetti also saw their number one and three matches head into the third set. Yates, playing at number three singles, fell behind but rallied to win the second set 6-4 versus Ze Moya. Moya would win the match after a 6-3 triumph in the third set. Simonetti also secured a 6-3 win in his second set only to see Rise Lanne take the third 6-4 for the victory.
The Spartans step back into conference play Saturday, April 2 as they travel to Fort Myers, Fla. for a 2 p.m. match against Florida Gulf Coast.
