Upstate Secures 6-1 Road Victory at Chattanooga

Chattanooga, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team earned a non-conference win on the road Tuesday afternoon as the Spartans defeated the Chattanooga Mocs 6-1 from the Champions Club.

Upstate improves to 3-8 on the season while Chattanooga falls to 4-8 overall.

The Spartans struck first in the match by capturing the doubles point with wins at the number one and two positions. At the number two doubles spot, Lenhard Haupt and Ignacio Garrido got things started by defeating Lucas Plesky and Nick Wingord 6-1. Ramon Simonetti and Ankush Arora secured the 1-0 lead for Upstate after winning their number one doubles match 6-4 over Luke Saunders and John Peacey. Rajanvir Dharni and Matt Bennion were leading their number three match against Michael Birnbaum and Paul LaHue 5-4 when the Spartans won the doubles point.

Upstate picked up victories in five singles matches to collect the 6-1 victory beginning with Dharni at the number five position. Dharni topped Pablo Llebeili in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 before Peacey cut the Mocs' deficit to 2-1 after his win at number four singles over Garrido.

The Spartans swept the remaining four matches over Chattanooga starting at the number three spot when Jamie Yates won 6-2, 6-3 over Saunders. Arora won the match for Upstate at number two singles when he defeated Wingord in a second set tiebreaker 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Bennion followed at number six with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 three-set victory against LaHue. Simonetti closed the match out with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 triumph over Plesky in the number one contest.

The Spartans remain in Tennessee Thursday afternoon as they face Tennessee Tech at 1 p.m.
