Upstate Downs Kennesaw State 5-2 on Senior Day

Spartanburg, S.C. -- The USC Upstate men's tennis team won its second straight match after turning in a 5-2 victory over the Kennesaw State Owls Sunday on Senior Day in the final regular season home match from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Upstate improves to 7-12 on the season and 3-2 in conference play, while Kennesaw State falls to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in the league. The Spartans held their Senior Day festivities following the match as they honored Ramon Simonetti, Jamie Yates and Rajanvir Dharni.

Upstate took a 1-0 lead as it won two doubles matches at number one and three. After the Owls won at number two doubles, the Spartans responded by taking the next two beginning at number two when Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion topped Lucas de Torres Cuth and Jorge Wilton 6-4. Simonetti and Ankush Arora held off David Durham and Drew Wendel 7-5 to give Upstate the doubles point.

The Spartans would then capture the first four singles contests for the 5-2 victory. Garrido got things started at the number five match as he won in straight sets over Wendel 6-4, 6-4. Yates followed at the number three position by also defeating Durham in straight sets by scores of 6-0, 6-2.

Simonetti clinched the match for Upstate with his 6-3, 6-3 victory over Simon Pritchard in the number one singles match. Lenhard Haupt, playing at number four, scored the Spartans fifth point following his 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Torres Cuth.

Upstate concludes its regular season on the road Saturday, April 16 against NJIT at 10 a.m.
