Elon Uses Singles Wins to Defeat Upstate in Home Finale

– The USC Upstate women's tennis team dropped its final home match of the regular season against Elon on Thursday afternoon as the Phoenix swept singles play en route to a 6-1 victory at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.

Elon improves to 13-9 while Upstate falls to 0-20.

After Elon claimed the number three doubles match, Upstate won the first and second doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Anna Zoske and Filippa Ericson claimed a 6-3 victory over Kristen Ward and Natalia Janowicz at number one doubles. Carol Sigaki and Vale Zarama clinched the doubles point for the Spartans thanks to a 6-3 win at number two doubles over Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi.

Elon would go on to win all six singles matches in two sets and clinched the match after a 6-2, 6-0 win at number one singles.

Upstate concludes the 2016 regular season at NJIT on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner of the Upstate/NJIT match will claim the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Sun Championship next week, which will be held at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
